Hypnotherapy after divorce or a long-term breakup
For when you understand your divorce perfectly well and still cannot get through his birthday. Insight was never the bottleneck.
What we actually work on
- Sleep and the 3am rehearsals. The conversations you keep having with someone who is not there. First to move, usually.
- The ambushes. The song, the restaurant, the street, the smell. These are specific and they can be worked on specifically — you can usually list them, which makes them tractable.
- The unfinished conversation. It can be completed without his participation. People do not believe this until it happens.
- The verdict. Separating "the marriage ended" from "therefore I am unlovable" — two claims that fuse so fast most people never see the join.
- The age story. That it does not restart at your age. We look at what that thought is protecting you from.
- Identity, which is the long one. Not recovering from a loss but building the version of your life that has you in it. Grief work gets you to neutral; something has to get you past it.
- Drinking, where it applies. It goes up after a separation more often than anyone says, and it arrives disguised as a social life.
Why hypnotherapy for this
By now you can probably explain your divorce better than anyone. That is exactly the problem — understanding it has not stopped the ambushes, because the ambushes are not made of understanding.
A long relationship gets integrated into how your brain models the world: routines, references, the automatic I'll tell him later. Undoing that happens association by association, usually by being triggered and failing. Hypnosis reaches that layer directly — attention narrows, suggestion is accepted rather than debated, and the associations get updated instead of merely explained.
I have been through this
My own divorce is part of why I do this work. The grief I had braced for. What I had not braced for was the identity: a life that checked every box — career, family reunions, mutual friends, a daily routine — and then it was gone. I am not guessing at what that silence is like.
That does not make me your peer support, and I will not spend your session talking about myself. It does mean you will not have to explain the shape of it from scratch.
Realistic expectations
Sleep and intrusions usually shift in the first two or three sessions. The verdict work and the identity rebuild take longer — six to eight sessions is a fair arc, and some people continue past that because the rebuilding turns out to be the interesting part rather than the painful one.
If it happened very recently
Early grief is not a malfunction and does not need treating. Come when it stops moving, when the same month keeps repeating, or when something else has grown on top of it.

About these sessions
Will hypnosis make me stop loving him?
No, and that is not the goal. The aim is that you can think about him deliberately without being knocked sideways involuntarily. Most people find affection survives and the compulsion does not.
Does it work if I am the one who ended it?
Yes, and it is often harder than people expect, because grief plus guilt is worse than grief, and because everyone assumes you are fine.
What if I am not sure it is really over?
Then that is the work, and it is legitimate. What is not useful is making that call from a state of no sleep and constant adrenaline.
Is this couples therapy?
No. This is one-to-one work with you. If you are trying to repair a relationship rather than recover from one ending, you want a couples therapist and I will say so.
Not sure this is for you? That is a fine place to start.
Send a request and tell me what is actually going on. I reply within one to two business days with your intake paperwork and a secure link to pay and pick your time. No payment is taken at the request stage, and if I am not the right person for this I will say so and point you somewhere better.
Requests go to a secure, HIPAA-compliant SimplePractice form — no payment is taken there. Sessions are held online by video, worldwide.
