Hypnotherapy for codependency and loving a partner who uses

For the person who is coping, not the person who is using. Work on the vigilance, the guilt and the reflex to manage — so you get your own life back whatever he does next.

What we actually work on

Not his drinking. Yours is the only nervous system in the room, and it turns out there is a great deal to do there.

  • The vigilance. The startle at the door, the reading of his voice on the phone, the scanning you no longer notice you are doing. This is a trained reflex and it can be retrained.
  • Sleep. Almost everyone in this situation sleeps badly, usually because some part of them is on watch. It is normally the first thing to move and it makes everything else easier.
  • The guilt that fires when you do something for yourself. Including this.
  • The managing reflex itself. Not removed — it is genuinely useful in the rest of your life — but taken off permanent duty.
  • The anger you have nowhere to put, because he is unwell and you are supposed to be understanding.
  • Deciding, if that is what you are trying to do. Not for you, and not toward a particular answer. But a decision made from exhaustion is not really a decision.

Why hypnotherapy rather than more insight

You know what boundaries are. That knowledge has not changed what you do at 11pm, and no further reading is going to.

The reason is that these responses do not run on the reasoning layer. In hypnosis, attention narrows and the part of you that argues with every suggestion quiets down, so change can be made where the pattern actually sits. That is the whole mechanism, and it is not more complicated than that.

Parts work, which matters more here than anywhere

With this pattern there is almost always a part of you whose entire job has been keeping someone safe — often since long before you met him. If we try to override it, it digs in, and it is right to. It has been doing something important.

I am trained in Internal Family Systems, and the work is usually a negotiation rather than a demolition: what would it take for that part to stand down slightly, and what does it need to trust that standing down is not abandonment? Most of the durable movement in this work happens in that conversation.

What changes, realistically

Clients usually report the same order of things. Sleeping through more nights. Not scanning when the door goes. Doing one thing for themselves without the guilt arriving. Being able to have a conversation with him without it becoming a strategy. And then, later, actual clarity about what they want — which is the point, and which was never available while they were running on adrenaline.

What this is not

Not treatment for his addiction, not couples work, and not a replacement for Al-Anon, psychotherapy or your own recovery if you need it. If there is violence or danger, please get urgent help rather than an appointment — in the US, 988, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline on 1-800-799-7233.

Questions

About these sessions

Do you work with the person who is using as well?

Not for their substance use — that needs proper addiction treatment, and I will say so. I work with the partner. Occasionally I see someone whose own drinking has crept up after a divorce, which is a different situation and one I will assess honestly.

How many sessions?

Plan for six to eight. Sleep and vigilance usually move in the first two or three; the deeper pattern — the reflex to manage everyone — takes longer because it has been useful to you for most of your life.

Will you tell me to leave him?

No. I have no preferred outcome and I would be overstepping badly. My job is to get you to a state where the decision is actually yours to make rather than something that happens to you at 2am.

Can I do this alongside Al-Anon or therapy?

Yes, and it often works better that way. Tell your therapist you are doing it — in my experience most are glad of it.
